This page includes: The interpretation of dreams, dream journals,
making use of the waking dream and "What if you have no memory of your dreams?"
THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS
I believe that no one can interpret your dream as well as you, once you
develop your abilities and awareness. Books can give you a start, but keeping a
list of experiences and possible meanings that you discover is the one of the
most beneficial ways -- and possibly the fastest way to learn. Yes, this
means that you can't go to someone else all of the time and ask them to
interpret your dreams for you! This is the path of
self-responsibility! <G>
I like to make a kind of dream dictionary, making notes of
the things that have personal meanings to me. That way I can begin to relate the
dreams in a more meaningful way, and see patterns as I recall and interpret the
dreams.
Another way to work with your dreams is to share them with
someone who knows you well. What is a puzzle to you may be quite clear to
another. I have been working with dreams all of my life, and they are wonderful
tools. I am usually clear about the meaning of my dreams, but if I am not, I
talk it over with a loved one that knows me and that I trust. That does the
trick!
DREAM JOURNALS
You will need to keep a dream journal if you wish to make the most of your
opportunity. You will begin to remember your dreams, if you keep a journal. Keep
it by the side of your bed where it is convenient to reach. When you first wake,
whatever the time, jot down the dream, or important details. That will keep them
fresh for you to think about later. Even jotting down a few words that convey
the main theme of the dream will help you to remember it later. The messages can
be very clear, or quite strange! They are coming through our subconscious and
there's a lot in there to filter through! A lot of the messages we receive are
censored heavily by this lower part of our mind, because we can't handle what we
see in the Dreams. But, with the practice of balance in emotional and spiritual
ways, we can develop the ability to remember and use this information. As you
clear things out, it will be easier.
Write down your thoughts and feelings about the dream,
characters, etc. Not just the details about the dream, but how you felt about it
while dreaming and upon awakening.
Making Use of the "Waking Dream"
This is a technique where you write down the main themes and situations of
the day in your dream journal and treat the whole day as if it happened in a
dream. Go ahead and interpret the themes of the day. This develops the habit and
helps train your mind to remember. Also, you may find that something is trying
to come through to you in this manner and you have been unable to get it.
EXAMPLE:
A woman is having a real problem with her
boss. He seems to walk all over her and she is thinking about quitting. She
decides to use this problem as a test for the idea of journalizing her day and
treating it as a dream.
She goes to the grocery store and a can of peas fell off of the shelf and rolled
out into the aisle. As she sat down to write about her day, she remembered it
and it seemed strange. At the moment the peas rolled out, she was thinking about
the problem she had with her boss. She wrote it down. And promptly forgot about
it.
The next day, she was too agitated by what was happening at work to cook, so she
went out to eat. The vegetable of the day turned out to be peas. Her waiter’s
name happened to be that same as her boss.
The incident remained in her mind, so, she wrote it down.
At this point, she began to feel as if there were a slight connection, but she
did not know what it was.
On her way to work the next day, she saw a funny bumper sticker that said
"Pray for Peas (peace) on earth," with a can of peas on the sticker.
Just then, a car came out of the intersection and bumped in the car with the
"peas" bumper sticker.
The same day, she went out to lunch with a friend and the conversation turned to
her situation with her boss. The friend told her that she used to have the same
problems with a man that she worked for. She had also become fed up and had been
ready to quit. She said that she had finally decided that peace (peas) with him
at any price just wasn’t worth it.
She gathered up her courage and went to him and told him how she felt-- and he
listened. He apologized told her that he wants his employees the him when they
think he is wrong. He promised to be more considerate. Everything had worked out
at that job.
As the woman wrote about this in her journal that night, she saw a connection
and she felt sure that she was being pointed towards confronting her boss.
Even though it was a scary thought, she decided to go tell him how she
felt.
And guess what....it worked!
The woman this happened to was amazed. She would never have normally taken the
advice of her friend because she was raised with a strong bias against
confronting authority figures. She said that it was all of the repeating signs
that supported the idea of coming clean and the feeling of peace (peas!) as she
read over the journal that decided her on her course of action.
This type of journal is an important source of validation.
Keep your eyes and ears open for what people are saying to you during the day
and things that stand out. Remembering dreams is about developing your overall
awareness level and paying attention to details.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE NO MEMORY OF THE DREAMS?
First of all, you need to be patient. You are building up spiritual
"muscles" and it takes some time, just like it takes times to build up
your physical body. There are some spiritual exercises that will help you, but
the bottom line is making it a habit to remember.
Try the technique above, where you write down the main themes
and situations of the day in your dream journal and then treat it as a dream. Go
ahead and interpret the themes of the day. This develops the habit and helps
train your mind to remember. Also, you may find that something is trying to come
through to you in this manner and you have been unable to get it. You will be
surprised that just doing this can help you to start remembering night time
dreams.
Remember to keep your eyes and ears open for what people are
saying to you during your day. This can be a form of Guidance. Remembering
dreams is about developing your overall awareness level. Pay attention to
things that stand out in your day to help develop habits that form a foundation
for remembering dreams and making sense of them.
Be patient and keep trying. If one exercise doesn't
work, try another. Most people start dreaming fairly quickly after trying
out an exercise. When they complain that they are no longer remembering
dreams, I always ask then if they are doing an exercise... 95% or more
quit doing them once they worked. Try them again!
