Steve Merrell is an electronics engineer,  working in the Alternative Healing field. In martial arts, practice is essential so that the various moves and counter  moves ingrained and second nature. Hesitation, in certain circumstances, can  be painful or even deadly. If you have put the time and self-discipline into practice and into mastering your art, you won't need to think about what to do, if you are in danger. You'll simply make the appropriate moves without taking precious time to reason it out. Energy work is much the same.

Taking workshops, learning about subtle energies, chakras, etc. -- becoming certified in one solid discipline or another -- is part of a wonderful foundation.  Developing a strong foundation that you can build upon is essential.  Using your skills and knowledge on a regular basis is also fantastic. I think most people would agree that you can't get better if you don't practice.

You can learn to work with someone else's energy and become very good at it. There are many workshops and classes that teach techniques and methods to become more proficient in various areas.  Less commonly shared in depth are the effects on your own energy when you work with other people's energy regularly.
